Black Sails Coffee Roasters is a small, independent cottage food operation based out of its home port of Rancho Cordova, California along the winding American River in the Sacramento Valley. The small business originated from the mind and glorious beard of it’s owner, a multiple award-winning and highly rated coffee roaster.
Our founder first began his roasting journey as an Apprentice under a “fiercely” independent roastery largely considered the grandfather of the specialty coffee scene within Sacramento. Here he toiled away, learning and refining his craft. After a few years, he chose his options carefully and ascended in rank to become the Head Roaster and Green Coffee Buyer of a highly regarded, handcrafted coffee empire. Here he went to war in numerous tournaments against a continent of challengers and it is here where he won his accolades.
In 2018, the first year of his tournament crusades, he won a Silver Medal for his efforts in the Espresso Category and a Bronze Medal in the Pour Over category in the Golden Bean North America competition. The following July of 2019, he submitted two coffees for blind review and emerged with two separate 4.5 out of 5 star reviews. In September of 2019, again in the Golden Bean North America competition but this time against 1300 submissions, he submitted a total of eight coffees and walked away with six medals - four Silvers (Organic Espresso, Single Origin Espresso, North American Grown espresso, Decaf Espresso) and two Bronze (Filter Brew, Single Origin Espresso). That same week of September he also received two 5 star out of 5 star ratings for a blind review of Northern California coffee roasters.
Now, with years of experience and multiple awards to his name, he has decided to run his own ship. Join us as we set sail on what will surely be the adventure of a life time and help support a small business trying to live it's dream.
